Size: ">Attachment 222But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.— Romans 5:8

When you tell other people about what God has done for you, you are sharing your testimony. A testimony is when you share your story of how you came to faith. Every Christian has a testimony.

Some Christians have dramatic testimonies where they tell of being delivered from a life of drug addiction or crime or some sordid deeds. Other Christians don't have testimonies that are quite as dramatic—but they are just as significant.

I like to hear how people came to Christ, but I don't like it when people go into gory details about their past. Then there are testimonies where people tell how much they have given up for Jesus. They'll say things like, "I gave up this and that for Jesus. I have made such sacrifices for the Lord. I have done it all for Him!"

Your testimony is not about what you gave up for Jesus. It's about what He gave up for you. Don't share what you have done for Jesus. Share what Jesus has done for you. Jesus is the one who has done the work. It is Jesus whom we are proclaiming.

A good, strong testimony will lift up what Christ has accomplished. The fact of the matter is that all of us were sinners hopelessly separated from God, traveling in the same boat on our way to hell; and the same gospel came and transformed us. That is the testimony we all have.

Hi Everyone,

I've been away from the site for longer than I should have been, due to a lot of things coming against me lately.

I really need your prayers for problems with my family, job, and life in general!

My family once again has been coming against me, especially my step father. I honestly have reached the point (a long time ago actually), to where I avoid him as much as possible because every time he sees me or just talks to me at all, it's a critical remark or something negative to or about me. It's really wearing on me more and more as time goes on. He also justifies everything he says, and spreads lies about me to anyone who is around him.

I'm still living with him and my mother, but have decided that living in the house here is actually doing more harm to me than good to them (I've stayed originally to help them out). So, as soon as I can afford a place of my own in this area, I'm going to move out. The problem is . . . finding a job that will allow me to move out! I was limited in the realm of jobs because I didn't have a vehicle to drive to work (so I had to walk), but I have a vehicle now and just pray that I can get a job that will provide the income to where I can move out. Please pray for me concerning this too!

I also recently found out a few things about myself that God had me realize. But without getting too into it all, I really need prayer that I can fully understand it and not go to one extreme or another. Growing up I never really had a relationship with my family. I was always pushed to the side. Instead I really only had actual relationships with wonderful brothers and sisters such as you here, people who have actually taken time to get to know me and actually WANT to get to know me. But I'm really seeking God and His Wisdom and Guidance on the realization of what He wants me to do and how to act and think and everything---especially regarding this. I suppose it's hard to explain what I mean, but I just really need guidance in all of this.

I was hoping to make enough at a job for me to afford buying a house or something, because I've never really liked the idea of renting. I also have two dogs that may very well have to come with me. However, I think I may have to settle for renting an apartment somewhere and just wait to own a house later on down the road if God allows. The problem I'm seeing is that nearly all apartments here cost about the same as it would to own a house, and only one so far allows pets.

I really appreciate all your prayers. I truly do need them. I've really been asking God what I'm to learn in staying in the house this long and living in such an atmosphere. It's just seriously difficult, and because it's family, it makes things feel much worse to me. All I can think in my mind is that I just need to learn to deal with such difficult to deal with people and situations, but at the same time this feels like the worst of the worst and makes me wonder why I would need to deal with such a thing in the future, and how strangers would possibly present this much trouble as I feel from family right now. God Knows though. I'm just really wondering if this is simply something I put myself in, or if God has had it happen this way for His Plan specifically.

Sorry if this post sounds negative or something though. I truly do need your prayers on all these matters :praying: Thank you all so much!

Heaven, the Real Thing

Size: ">Attachment 221For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. — 1 Corinthians 13:12

We tend to think of life on earth as the real thing and heaven as the surreal thing. But it is actually the opposite. Heaven is the real thing. That is why C. S. Lewis referred to our time on earth as "the shadowlands."

Heaven is the ultimate future and hope for the Christian. All that precedes it—our life on earth—is but a glimpse of things to come. Earth is a pale version of heaven, not the other way around.
Whatever great joys or things we have on earth, as wonderful as they are, will be better in heaven. Maybe you will have all of the things you hoped for and more. Then again, maybe there will be things that will surpass your wildest dreams that will be even better.

Heaven is the real thing, while earth is effectively the copy, the temporary dwelling place. The problem is that we start with earth and reason up to heaven, when we ought to start with heaven and reason down toward earth. C. S. Lewis said, "The hills and valleys of Heaven will be to those you now experience not as a copy is to an original, . . . but as the flower to the root, or the diamond to the coal."

I am not suggesting that life is miserable and is merely something to endure before we finally get to heaven. Life can be wonderful. God has all the power you ever will need to face whatever you will face. Something difficult you are going through today could be turned into a good thing tomorrow. There will be many wonderful, joyful moments ahead for us on earth. But the ultimate joy will come when we finally see Jesus in heaven. And we must not lose sight of that.

A Freely Chosen Path

Size: ">Attachment 220I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live. — Deuteronomy 30:19

Hell was not made for people; hell was created for the devil and his angels (see Matthew 25:41). It was never God's intention to send a person to hell. He does everything He can to keep us out of it. But God has given us a free will. We have the ability to choose, and God will not violate that. If you want to go to heaven, then you will—if you put your faith in Christ. If you want to go to hell, then you will. It is your choice.

People will protest on that final day and say, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?" (Matthew 7:22). And Jesus will sadly but firmly say, "I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!" (verse 23).

Some people might say, "Wait! I went to church on Sunday!" And, "Wait! I received communion!" And, "Wait! I was baptized." But Jesus will say, in effect, "But I never knew you. It was just a thing you did. We never had a relationship. You broke My commandments left and right. It's your own choice that you are facing."

It is not enough to say you believe in God. It is not enough to acknowledge that God exists. You need to turn from your sin and put your faith in Jesus Christ, and Him alone, as Savior and Lord.

As Timothy Keller said, "Hell is simply one's freely chosen path going on forever." If that is what you want, then that is what you will get. God wants you to go to heaven, but He will not force you. He gives you a choice, and it is up to you what you do with that choice.

Attachment 219He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." — Matthew 26:39

Even Jesus, when He was in the Garden of Gethsemane, recoiled from what was ahead. He prayed, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me." Jesus, who was sinless and perfect and holy, was looking into the abyss of all the wicked things of this world and knew He would have to bear all that sin upon himself.

Sometimes it is possible for that so-called cup to pass. Sometimes God will answer our prayer in the affirmative and get us out of the situation we are in, like the disciples who cried out for help on the storm-tossed Sea of Galilee, and Jesus calmed the storm. Or like the sick who were healed or the dead who were raised by Jesus.

When a crisis hits and we cry out to God, He often will change our circumstances. I have seen people in the most dire of circumstances have their situation turned around by the power of God. And I think we always should pray for this.

But there are also times when God says, "No, you have to go through it." We might answer, "Never, Lord." But ultimately we will have to say, "Yes, Lord."

I have seen God work through the greatest tragedy of my life. And to be honest, if I could change my circumstances, I would change them and have my son Christopher back with us. But I don't have that option.

So if we believe in the providence of God, then we know that He is in control of all things. We also know that He allows things for purposes that we will not necessarily understand. So our attitude needs to be, "Lord, I don't like it. I don't understand it. I don't want it. But I will say, 'Yes, Lord.' "

Attachment 218Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. — Ephesians 6:18

To be successful as a Christian, you must have a prayer life. Prayer, simplified, is hearing from and communicating with God. There are different kinds of prayer identified in Scripture, including public prayer, private prayer, verbal prayer, and silent prayer. Also, any position is acceptable for prayer: you can pray kneeling, standing, sitting, lying down, or even driving (but always keep your eyes open, of course).

God hears our prayers wherever we offer them. Consider some of the places that people of the Bible prayed: Jonah prayed from the stomach of a whale. Daniel prayed in a den of lions. David prayed in a cave and also in the wilderness. And Peter prayed both on the water and in it after he sank. Wherever you are, God will hear your prayer.

The key is that we should pray frequently. We should pray in the morning. We should pray in the afternoon. We should pray in the evening. The Bible says, "Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:17–18).

Prayer can be continuous. Elijah, in seeking an audience with the wicked King Ahab, said, "I swear by the Lord Almighty, in whose presence I stand, that I will present myself to Ahab this very day" (1 Kings 18:15). Elijah was aware of the fact that wherever he went, he stood in the presence of God.

You, too, are never alone. Wherever you go, God is with you. You can commune with Him and fellowship with Him and pray to Him and hear from Him. That is the idea of continuous prayer: being in fellowship and communion with God.

If you want to grow spiritually, then make prayer a vital and regular part of your life.
Size: ">Attachment 217Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. — 2 Timothy 2:22

From the moment you get up in the morning to the moment you lay your head down on your pillow at night, you will have made hundreds, maybe even thousands, of choices.

That is why ordering at some restaurants is no easy task. The menu resembles a small telephone book. There are too many options. One of the reasons I like In-N-Out Burger is that your options are simple: a hamburger, french fries, a drink, or maybe a shake. Of course, there are some variations to that, like adding cheese or ordering it animal-style. But that is pretty much it.

Life is filled with choices. There are some choices that don't mean a lot, while other choices mean a whole lot. And it comes down to this: we make our choices, and our choices make us. So if you want to grow spiritually, you will. And if you don't want to grow spiritually, you won't. Either you will go forward as a Christian, or you will go backward. Either you will progress, or you will regress. Either you will gain ground, or you will lose ground. And if you stand still, then you will lose ground.

The reason some Christians succeed while others who make a profession of faith fail miserably comes down to choices. It is not the luck of the draw or something that happens randomly. It is because people make the right choice to do the right thing. There are choices that will impair our spiritual growth, and there are choices that will enhance it.

That is why we need to make a commitment to seek to grow spiritually on a daily basis—not to just hold our ground, but to gain ground in our relationship with Christ. Let's commit ourselves to spiritual growth.

A. W. Tozer said, "Nothing twists and deforms the soul more than a low or unworthy conception of God." I think that is true, because if you don't understand who God is, if your view of God is warped, then it will affect you in the way that you live. We must have a proper understanding of the character and nature of God.

What you believe will enable you to get through the challenges and the difficulties of life. And there is no better place to start than with God himself and what the Bible says about Him.

When Paul was on the tempest-tossed sea on the way to Italy and it looked as though everyone on the ship would die, God assured him that he would arrive safely in Rome. So Paul was able to tell the crew,

"Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me, and he said, 'Don't be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar! What's more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone sailing with you.' So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said." (Acts 27:23–25)

Paul believed God, and we should too, because we live in a storm-tossed world. We don't know where the problems we're facing today will lead. These are uncertain times, and we need a real certainty that will help us get through it. Though times and circumstances change, God never does. All but God is changing day by day. God says, "I am the Lord, and I do not change" (Malachi 3:6).

When you believe God, it doesn't necessarily change your circumstances, though sometimes it will. But more often than not, it will change you.

Willing to Be a Barnabas?

Attachment 215Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul. He also told them that Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus. — Acts 9:27

You would think that upon returning to Jerusalem after his conversion that Paul would have been greeted as a hero: "Can you believe it? Our worst enemy has now become a follower of Jesus! Isn't this glorious? Isn't this wonderful? God has saved the notorious Saul, and he is now a fellow believer!" But that is not what happened at all. In fact, when Paul returned to Jerusalem, the church didn't believe that he was really converted. They thought it was some kind of trap. Here he was, a new believer, and they didn't think he was even converted.

Enter an unsung hero, Barnabas. Effectively the believers were saying, "You can't come to our worship service, Saul. We don't trust you." But Barnabas essentially said, "Paul, you come with me." Then he took him and brought him to the apostles.

That is what we need to do with new believers. We need to take them to church with us, because the greatest danger a new believer faces after making a commitment to Christ is falling through the cracks and going back to their old friends and their old ways. They need a brother or sister in Christ, an Ananias or a Barnabas who will take them and say, "You are coming with me to church."

Someone did that for me. His name was Mark, and after I became a Christian, he took me to church and took me under his wing. I needed someone like that. Everyone wants to be a Paul or a Simon Peter, but who will be a Barnabas? It doesn't matter whether you are a hero or an unsung hero; just don't be a zero. Just do something, and realize that God has a place for each of us to be used for His glory.
Size: ">Attachment 214And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.
— 2 Corinthians 1:10

Imagine holding a winning lottery ticket worth millions of dollars, but not claiming what is rightfully yours. According to one article I read, it happens quite often. Someone beat the odds of 76,275,360 to 1 to win a jackpot of $46 million, but the prize went unclaimed. And in California, a $25 million prize was never collected.

God has a prize for us that is of greater value than millions and millions of dollars. It is called salvation. For some it is unclaimed, for others it is unused, and for many, it is unappreciated and perhaps somewhat unknown. But when we put our faith in Jesus Christ, the Bible is adamant in saying that we are saved. It is our present possession.

Salvation covers your past. When you are tempted to think that you are not worthy, that you don't deserve salvation, you can be assured that God has forgiven you of all your sin. We base our salvation not on our feelings in the moment, but on the fact of what the Word of God says. Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life" (John 5:24).

Salvation covers your present, because not only has God saved you, but He is saving you—saving you from the power and control of sin. In 2 Corinthians 1:10 we read that God "did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us."

Salvation covers your future as well, because God will deliver you from future judgment. Romans 5:9 says, "And since we have been made right in God's sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God's condemnation."

Salvation means that God has saved you. God is saving you. And God will save you in the future.
Size: ">Attachment 213But the word of God grew and multiplied. — Acts 12:24

At the beginning of Acts 12, we find a seemingly all-powerful Herod wreaking havoc on the church. He had on his side the power of government, the sword, and the threat of prison. But the church had on their side the Creator of the universe and the secret weapon He had given to them, and to us, called prayer.

As Acts 12 comes to a close, we find the great Herod giving a speech. The Jewish historian Josephus points out that at this particular event, Herod was dressed from head to toe in silver. As the sun reflected off him, he looked like a god to the people. At the conclusion of his speech, the people were so taken with him that they began to shout, "The voice of a god and not of a man!" (verse 22). Meanwhile, Herod soaked it all in. So next we read that "immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died" (verse 23). The Lord dealt a fatal blow to a wicked man. The narrative concludes with, "But the word of God grew and multiplied" (verse 24).

So Acts 12 opens with Herod on a rampage, arresting and persecuting church leaders. James is dead, Peter is in prison, and Herod appears to be triumphing. But the chapter closes with Herod himself being struck down, Peter free, and the Word of God triumphing.

If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, then you have access to God through a relationship with Him. You can call on the Almighty God who will hear—and answer—your prayers according to His will.

So you see, it's not over until it's over. That is why we need to keep praying.
